What is the production process of luggage hardware?

Step 1 : Drawing and design

The development of handbags and luggage hardware is the same as the development of handbags and bags. First, product drawings and designs can determine specifications and dimensions in the first begining. Experienced designer and engineer will draw various data according to the project and customer requirements.

Step 2: Making the mold

The most critical process during the production of luggage hardware is the molds making. If there is not a well-designed mold, the manufacturer will not produce good luggage hardwares. So how exactly a manufacturer’s product is depends on the level of the manufacturer’s mold technologies. According to the designed data, mold placement and structure, program, engineers control CNC machine tools to engrave and process the shape of the molds. Discharging with the sparkling machine for several hours to imprint the mold shape on the mold material. Once the new mold is built, it needs to be tested for many times to make sure the rough product is valid from it. After the mold is assembled, the die-casting machine is installed and rough product is formed, we need to check the samples from the new mold installation testing mold for any problems, and assemble the product.

If there is any problem with the sample tested, the mold will be sent back to the mold department for processing and modification. After modification, try the mold again until the sample tested is qualified. Then the molds that have passed the tests will be engraved with a unique number and stored in a dedicated warehouse.

Step 3: Die casting

When a die casting manufacturer has made the mold ready, the next step is die casting. The die-casting machine is a very special machine, and it cannot be operated by ordinary people but needs to be handled by experienced workers.

Why do I say that?

There are many different tonnages of die-casting machines, and often the tonnage of luggage hardware is about 25 tons. Certain type of die-casting machine can only be operated well by experienced masters, because experienced masters will control the strength of the pressure in a perfect way. If the pressure of the die-casting machine is lighter, it will definitely make the product uneven on the surface. If it is used more strongly, the products will have too many burrs, and it will increase the electricity cost in factory. Therefore, it is very important to have a good and experienced die-casting machine master, which may not only reduce the factory overall cost, but also can produce as few as possible defective products.

Step 4: polishing.

The mold is installed within a die-casting machine to press out a rough product, which may have burrs (burrs, flashes) on the edges. In order to get smooth fancy outlook in the end, they need to be polished with grinding wheels or other professional ways. After removing the large areas of burrs and edges, the product needs to be polished with a hemp wheel and cloth wheel to make the surface as smoother as possible.

In the luggage hardware industry, polishing is an important indicator of whether the product can sell for a good price, especially for female products. All kinds of metal accessories are just like women’s jewelry. If the luggage accessories need shiny feeling, then they need to be highly polished and then electroplated. This shiny effect can only appear after the necessary polishing steps are accomplished, so polishing is an extremely important step.

Step 5: Putting on the foot piece.


This is to fix the luggage to make it more durable or more shaped to make consumers like it. The two machines that will be used here are a punching machine and a tapping machine. The punching machine is a die-casting equipment. Nowadays, the production process is improved and it is gradually replaced by bench drills.

Step 6: Electroplating.

The most most critical process in the production of luggage hardware is electroplating, which cost the most during all the production processes. Chemicals and required color will be added into a tank, conducting electricity through the reaction of the current and the chemicals, the surface of the product will be coated with color.

After each process of electroplating, the products need to be cleaned once and then enter the next tank to continue. The times and duration of electroplating directly affect the service life of the hardware. High quality hardware will be sealed with the glaze on the surface after electroplating to improve the oxidation resistance and to increase the service life. The experience of the electroplating worker has great influence on the electroplating quality.

Too long or too short electroplating time will have a serious impact on the luggage hardware. In this step, we strictly handle every process to prevent rust, acid and sweat according to customer requirements.
